Assistant Controller

Job Summary

Manages a team of accounting professionals to provide accurate and timely financial reporting for assigned portfolio(s) of clients and properties. Implements processes to ensure consistency and compliance with reporting and contractual requirements. Reviews and ensures accuracy of all financial reports completed by accounting team.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directly manages, trains, and develops one or more teams of accounting professionals. Delegates work appropriately to ensure work procedures are adhered to.

  • Reviews and verifies monthly, quarterly, and annual financial packages of staff to ensure complete, accurate and timely delivery to clients. Reviews journal entries, management fees, distributions, etc. for accuracy and completeness.

  • Reviews system prepared reports and supporting schedules for accuracy.

  • Reviews capacity/workload of staff and adjusts individual assignments based on analysis. Identifies scope of service changes and informs management of scope creep situations.

  • Verifies and ensures mortgage, real estate tax, sales tax and other critical payments are made timely and that internal reports are updated and maintained accordingly.

  • Reviews or assists in the preparation of annual budgets, quarterly reforecasts, and year-end recovery calculations. Works with clients and internal teams to establish budgets and meet objectives.

  • Participates in and/or leads internal and external audits, as needed, by preparing and reviewing schedules and coordinating supporting documents. Coordinates with internal staff to ensure all documentation is prepared and delivered accordingly.

  • Troubleshoots escalated issues and ensures requests are handled timely, accurately and with a focus on customer service.

  • Conducts ongoing training to team on processes, policies, and protocols.

  • Leads all aspects of property transitions.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provides direct supervision to assigned team of accounting professionals. Participates in and makes recommendations for staff recruitment, selection, promotion, advancement, and disciplinary action. Completes performance reviews and establishes performance goals for team. Coaches and mentors team and provides developmental opportunities to build upon skill sets. Leads by example and models appropriate behavior and professionalism.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Accounting, Finance or related field from a four-year college or university with six plus years prior accounting, finance, or related experience, including direct oversight of individuals and teams; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Prior experience in real estate accounting and real estate accounting software, including Yardi and MRI, is strongly preferred.

 

Certificates and/or Licenses

  • None required.

 

Communication Skills

  • Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex business documents and to effectively write reports, manuals, etc. using distinctive style. Ability to effectively respond, verbally and in writing, to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints.

  • Ability to effectively present to individuals and groups on general topics. Ability to inspire and motivate employees and promote an environment of continuous learning.

 

Financial Knowledge

  • Requires advanced knowledge of financial terms and principles. Ability to conduct advanced financial analysis. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills and advanced knowledge of GAPP and FASB regulations.

 

Other Skills/Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of computer software and hardware (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite Products).

  • Ability to solve problems, make decisions and take action in varying and sometimes ambiguous circumstances and with limited information.
